The Ziggurat Builder:
Trinoc-Con 2003 Events
Hey everyone- My name is Andy Kitkowski (look for me: I'll be the guy with the punked-out spikey blonde hair and the Hawaiian shirt), and I'm a big fan of the Trinoc-Con event. I've only been to one once before, but that event was definitely the most fun I've had at an area gaming convention all year! To help support the gaming side of the convention, I've taken to running a couple of sessions of various RPGs that most people have never played. After all, that's what conventions are all about: Playing new, unique games that sound interesting, and doing pointman lookout for new games to bring back to your regular gaming group, friends and families. So the games I run are always light, easy to learn, and as fun as I can possibly make them. Therefore for all of my games, I don't expect anyone to know the rules beforehand, and thus I always run a crash-course in the rules before play begins. "Newbies" are expected, and ALWAYS welcome!
For all my games, I will be bringing pregenerated characters, but for the two games that DON'T require a lot of time to make a character (Dread and Sorcerer), I usually get the players to make their own characters. Making the exact kind of character you want to play is a big part of the gaming experience, and it would be foolish not to recognize that! ... Plus, I can't count the number of times that I showed up out of interest to some event or other at GenCon, only to be handed the "crippled, abusive, one-armed colorblind halfling bard with Turrets Syndrome" kinds of characters.
You've probably seen my games listed at the TrinocCon site already, but here they are again (click on the title to get more information), including a little background on the game and why I chose it.

SYSTEM, SYSTEM INFO
|
BESM: "Big Eyes, Small Mouth", the Anime RPG. Basically, this RPG uses but two 6-sided dice for all task resolution. Emphasis is on high-action, simple characters, quick task resolution, and fun over realism. You only have three attributes, Body Mind and Spirit, and everything you do falls under one of those three categories. |
DREAD: The First Book of Pandemonium This system uses ONLY 12-sided dice for task resolution (don't sweat it! I'll be bringing enough for everyone). Dice rolls are fast and simple. This is a survival horror game, high on action and drama and low on reality. The feel is "creepy", like Clive Barker, or the Silent Hill or Fatal Frame game series |
Sorcerer... Sort of. This was originally built using the Sorcerer system, but is now its own game, being playtested for production next year. Sorcerer is a storytelling game (HEAVY emphasis on "story") of personal conflict that leaves you asking, "What would you give for real Power?" The system uses many six-sided dice, also focuses on cinematic (instead of 'realistic') action and quick task resolution, and has gimmicks like limited superpowers. |

MORE INFO
|
This game will feature many choosable pregenerated characters (1 for each player, plus some more, so there's a large pool to choose from), including Mentats, Bene Gessrit, Fremen, and all other popular Dune archetypes. For this game, I'm asking that some menial amount of familiarity with the Dune universe (even just seeing the movie long ago). I'm not going all out "trekkie-style" or anything, but I'll be dropping references to Sardaukar, House Harkonnen, etc. |
There's only one thing to say: While I'd LOVE for you to attend my game, the creator of Dread, Rafael Chandler, will also be at Trinoc-Con, running games and hosting panel discussions. He's one of the best GMs I've ever met, and playing a game of Dread with him is like nothing in this world. By any means possible, attend one of his games. Seriously. My game? It's a game of Dread, which is normally set in the US (specifically North Carolina), but set in Japan instead. I'll help everyone make characters that are both Japan-like and fun to play. |
Last year's session of Kyuseisha was an absolute blast for everyone involved! I'm so looking forward to this year's session. This is a game I've been working on and off of for some 3 years now. It's in the final playtest stages. It features "Grey Area" moral decisions, harsh "Man vs Nature" environments, powerful cinematic martial arts and combat, and other various supernormal abilities. |

PRIZES, ETC
|
None. Just a good time by all. And hey, who DOESN'T
like DUNE (besides my wife, of course)? Playing a DUNE game is reward
in itself! Or something. (^.^)
|
What's "Japan" without sushi, right? For breakfast that morning, I'll be bringing in homemade sushi rolls (tuna, salmon, egg, beef(!)) that my wife (who is Japanese) and I make in for everyone who plays. |
Since helping playtest will speed up this crucial phase of development, and get the game into production, not only will everyone's names appear in the Playtesting Credits, but I'll also be giving out 5-10 Special Edition "Kanji Dice" to each player. See THIS LINK for more info on these cool little dice. |
|
WHAT TO EXPECT
|
Expect to relive bits and pieces of the Dune universe,
and to run into a lot of Dune character types like Sardaukar (Emporer's
guard) and the like. Again, fun, light, hopefully funny but without
straining to be too goofy.
|
Expect a complete description of the setting, tips, and fun in a simulated Japan for folks who have even a remote interest in that country. Expect some Japanese stereotypes to appear, whether it be schoolgirls, small camers, ninjas, or all of the above. Also expect Andy to be very sleepy, so only interact with him after his morning coffee (^.^) |
Building a character from scratch (fast and easy), so you can play the kind of character you want. Player-driven storyline. I just lay out the events- What happens in the story is up to you. The players have a lot more control over the happenings of the game. Be ready to think outside the box here, as there's no "right answers" (as there normally are in prepackaged convention games) to any puzzle or conflict thrown at you. |
24 Hour Gaming
This year at TrinocCon, there will be all-night gaming rooms available! I don't know how much caffine I'll need or what zombielike state I'll be in, but if I'm feeling up for it, you'll see me there for a few hours running some, or more (or none!) of the following one of the two nights:
DANCE DANCE REVOLUTION! I'll be bringing a TV, PS2 and mats, so it's DDRMAX action all the way!
DUNE: The Board Game. See Board Game Geek .com for more info on this great game.
Kyuseisha Playtesting! I'll be trolling for more playtesters for this game. And I'll be giving out those cool Chinese Dice, too, to folks who help playtest!
DETOX! The delightful game of watching Andy recover from vodka gimlets at the hotel bar.
Gaming Talk Nothing is more interesting to me than discussing RPG and RPG theory (save possibly postmodern philosophy, Japan and Japanese culture, sociology, social constructivism, ancient history, African history, classical Greek philosophy, drum & bass music and other forms of techno, camping, Kung Fu, movies, New Age music, technology, business, current events, and cats). Come join me for a stirring conversation on recent developments in the gaming scene! Note: This event will probably be combined with "DETOX!", above.
See you at TrinocCon!
